Willingness to reason
Time had a collection of world leaders and thinkers comment on the results. To me, the most stunning and stunningly written was from Amartya Sen, Nobel Prize–winning economist. He's respectful with qualifications, and jabs Bush's unwillingness to reason with a kick-ass quote from Milton: obtruding false rules pranked in reason's garb.
And his opening assessment is concise: He won his presidency not as a black American but as a reasoning American who happens to be black.
I wish I had written that.
