[–]Crimsonred77 72 points73 points ago

The thing that sets off my alarm bell, is that Sunil disappears and leaves a "cryptic message" and then the FBI, becomes involved.

[–]YGMurkobe 37 points38 points ago

Maybe why the FBI was involved?

http://www.wickedlocal.com/hanover/news/x1037527396/Explosives-cause-concern-in-Hanover#axzz2QreVuvnH

"The second incident was a few days later at 7:49 p.m. on March 15."

http://abcnews.go.com/US/sunil-tripathi-surveillance-footage-shows-missing-ivy-league/story?id=18845517#.UXCoJ7WkpQV

"New images from a surveillance camera show 22-year-old Sunil Tripathi, of Radnor, Pa., moments after leaving his apartment at 1:33 a.m. on March 16"

Hanover is less than an hour from Providence... just sayin'.

*edit Anderson Cooper just basically said this on the air.
*edit2 To clarify, Anderson Cooper pretty much said something along the lines of "They would most likely practice before hand and we just received information that law officials have been investigating such cases in the Boston area in the past month.".

[–]syx20 8 points9 points ago

You have got to be kidding. The FBI was involved because they deal with FEDERAL cases where missing people are suspected of having crossed state borders.

[–]YGMurkobe 6 points7 points ago

Ok well they just said his name on scanner, he IS suspect #2.

[–]kenlayisalive 1 point2 points ago

Apparently not kidding.

[–]RiteousRage 1 point2 points ago

http://goo.gl/maps/ORxcc Here is a Map between the two places

[–]GethPrime 12 points13 points ago

What was the message?

[–]JCycloneKBoylston 22 points23 points ago

The FBI refused to release it.

[–]GethPrime 10 points11 points ago

Do they usually become involved in missing persons?

[–]JCycloneKBoylston 22 points23 points ago

They do not.

[–]jurassic_blue 1 point2 points ago

They were definitely interested and involved in the Lindbergh baby case...

[–]dsmithatx 11 points12 points ago

This is a 22 year old man who walked off on his on free will in Rhode Island. The Boston FBI was looking for him withing 3 days. You typically can't even report someone over 18 missing in 72 hours to local authorities.

[–]xqxcpa 1 point2 points ago

Why couldn't they put it together then? Why did they have to ask the public to ID him?

[–]IowaPeg 2 points3 points ago

That is actually untrue. If you have reason to suspect foul play, you can report immediately. He left his phone and wallet behind and if the message he left alluded to an attack, FBI- at the very least- would be looking for him.

[–]Stormy_knight 5 points6 points ago

His sister said it was a fake suicide note. The authorities didn't say. His friend said it was a suicide note.

[–]lingsched 6 points7 points ago

Source?

[–]FightThePowersThatBe 12 points13 points ago

I agree. I've been following since someone first posted the missing persons website. It's just too many coincidences. It looks like the "help find Sunil Tripathi" facebook page has just been removed. I sure hope not though. Too much for a family to bare.

[–]hashbrownies 6 points7 points ago

The page was up as of an hour ago, so the pull was very recent. After a call to local philly news stations, they are aware of the connection and looking into it. It's gotta be him.

[–]hypnosifl 9 points10 points ago

Maybe they just took it down because people were posting nasty messages there because all these internet rumors? (as mentioned by an old classmate who was speculating about whether he could be the bomber at http://imgur.com/a/1PqCt )

[–]acousticbruises 3 points4 points ago

Where in that article is the word "cryptic" used?

[–]ilex11 0 points1 point ago

[–]electricgrapes 1 point2 points ago

This could also be based on what they found on his computer.

[–]halvy2013 1 point2 points ago

[–]GreenTwin 13 points14 points ago

HOOOOOLLLY Shit. Police scanner just confirmed that marathon bomber #2 IS Sunil Tripathi.

[–]bax711 7 points8 points ago

Boston PD Confirms on Scanner Tripathi is bomber #2

[–]syx20 3 points4 points ago

Scanner calls him a SUSPECT. Does not CONFIRM him as bomber.

[–]theshapeofpunktocome 24 points25 points ago

my $0.02 as someone at brown who has met sunil and been following his case:

i am awful with faces so i don't feel i have any particular insight re the resemblance. but i agree w/ others in this thread that the suspect's nose and chin seem really different from his. the more pixelated photos could go either way, but this higher-res photo doesn't look like him at all to me.

as for his personality, i certainly don't know him well, but i've always had an impression of him as very thoughtful. can't really think of a better word for it. it's a particular kind of intelligence that is quiet, curious, and analytical. and no, i've never felt anything "off" about him--that's the first thing i would ask someone else in my position.

however, this uncomfortable possibility has been turning around in my head since monday. my perspective is influenced by the case of a high school kid from my hometown who was convicted of conspiracy to murder in the name of islam. he was a super bright kid who not only excelled in the sciences but had won awards for his writing. he'd been accepted to johns hopkins on a full scholarship. somehow he got enticed online by the jihadist movement and participated in a plot to kill the swedish cartoonist who had depicted mohammed. it doesn't seem so crazy to me that someone who is somehow maladjusted (even if they don't appear so on the outside!), highly intelligent, and most importantly young could find himself attracted to such extremism (whether related to islam or something completely different).

i spent a lot of time earlier today looking at the facebook page dedicated to sunil. it was absolutely moving, overflowing w/ love from his friends and family. but one thing did strike me, and i'll admit that i was reading it w/ this possibility in mind, so take this w/ a grain of salt: the way his loved ones were pleading for him to come back made me think, "it seems like they know something we don't." part of it may have been the fact that they were holding out such strong hope for his return--but god, we all should. it was more about the tone of preemptive forgiveness, how they stressed their unconditional love. i'm not implying his family knew he was involved in any sort of plot--my impression was that the contents of the "vague note" he left behind must have had some strong element of apology, some implication of "i've done something horrible" or "i'm going to do something horrible." and perhaps the implication that he was not going to kill himself.

another thing worth mentioning is an observation my dad had: that he disappeared the day before st. patrick's day, which also would have been a good (is "good" the right word?) opportunity to hurt a bunch of people at once (especially in boston). it could be that something similar was planned for that day and aborted.

despite the fact that i've been considering this possibility w/ some level of seriousness, i burst into tears when i saw this thread. i do not believe that suspect #2 is sunil and of course i hope that it is not. but if it is, my first reaction is not condemnation but the continuing hope that he and his family are ok and will be ok...

[–]AlcoholicMexican 12 points13 points ago

Dude...this thread is going to go down in history!

[–]d1z 5 points6 points ago

[–]syx20 1 point2 points ago

[–]callousedd 25 points26 points ago

Today, OP was not a faggot

[–]PoliticalyIncoherent 28 points29 points ago

Reddit 1.... news media 0

[–]bedhead1 21 points22 points ago

This is interesting. This circumstances of his disappearance are certainly strange. The cryptic note he left plus the fact that the FBI became involved are also odd. The FBI usually only gets involved in cases where someone is believed to have crossed state lines and/or there is some sort of suspected criminal element involved. The photos bear good resemblance...not perfect but there are definitely strong similarities...skin tone, hair color, approximate build, and yes that nose. The one photo of him with bushy hair he wears it kind of hanging over his forehead (re how the cap is worn). Also there were those incidents of homemade explosives found not far from Providence right around the time Sunil went missing. Providence is awfully close to Boston. Plus it happened very recently.

On the other hand, it still just seems like a stretch. Reddit has already failed spectacularly trying to identify the suspects. Plus there were two of these guys, and Sunil by all accounts wasn't terribly social. But dang I have to admit between the circumstances and the similarities of the photos, I dont think people are wrong to wonder about this. If they want to do it in some corner of the internet that's fine.

[–]slaak 11 points12 points ago

"an emotionally disturbed, underweight youth who "always wears three winter coats" and has a history of mental illness"

"He's not where he's supposed to be. But going into hiding, planning a highly-publicized suicide"

this report about him is kinda disturbing. im not sure what is considered normal in boston this time of year but bomber #2 is definitely wearing a couple winter coats and for whatever reason it seem the FBI was looking for him an frantically based off of whatever he left in his note. maybe they expected something which could explain the large amount of combat boot guys around

[–]mysterymannn 0 points1 point ago

very interesting

[–]hypnosifl 2 points3 points ago

Where do you see bomber #2 wearing a couple winter coats? It looks like he just has a sweatshirt under his coat. And it sounds like when they said "emotionally disturbed" they just were talking about what they elsewhere called "chronic, untreated depression", not anything violent or out-of-touch with reality.

You need to separate the trolls from normal people who are just chatting amongst themselves. Yes, trolls suck, but unfortunately they're a fact of life. Conversation about a potentially sensitive topic shouldn't be outlawed or regarded as repugnant every time the threat of trolls is present. You're right to be angry, but you should direct it at people who deserve it.

But I'm sorry, the photos look a lot like him so far. I'm sorry if that objective observation upsets you.

Not sure why.

[–]nygiants219 7 points8 points ago

Anyone follow this Ryan Sims 'suicide', found dead in NYC subway in Dec, dismembered. Seems like <<1% chance there's a link, but he's also brown student, studied something similar to this guy, similar age. On 3/15 his parents were suing NYC to get surveillance footage. Even if its not connected, who enters the subway at 7pm on a weekday and nobody notices they jump in front of a train/ the body is found many hours later? http://www.wpri.com/dpp/news/local_news/providence/brown-grad-found-dead-in-nyc-subway

[–]PallyIRL 1 point2 points ago

This is all getting to be some heavy conspiracy shit (the whole situation not your post) The FBI/CIA who ever is in on this would probably groom subjects for months before giving them their plot/objective. Maybe Ryan Sims was someone who wasn't going to cooperate and got strong armed?

[–]PoliticalyIncoherent 4 points5 points ago

[–]leo_leonardo 6 points7 points ago

This page says he had short hair when he went missing. The suspect clearly has medium-length curly hair.

Other than that, I'd say it's him.

[–]I_will_fix_this 6 points7 points ago

True, though that was a month ago when he went missing. Either way, it's just speculation.

[–]d3animator 1 point2 points ago

[–]EPluribusUnumIdiota 6 points7 points ago

Pure speculation, but the surveillance pic of Tripathi leaving his apartment with a friend shows him wearing a backpack with something whitish in the middle, very similar to the backpack worn by the black hat bomber in the surveillance video that shows them walking by and then from the rear. Sorry, I would link it, but phone.

[–]GeneralHiboshi 1 point2 points ago

you do realize there are more than 80,000 people listening to the bpd scanner right now right? yes, we all hear it, we confirm it.

here's another thread that is dedicated to the ongoing hunt in the streets http://redd.it/1cnl3y

[–]Zegopher 2 points3 points ago

[–]mccoyspace 2 points3 points ago

He's 6' 2". The reddit bomber height analysis people were right on, too.

[–]sarnzzle 2 points3 points ago

OP DELIVERED.

[–]tdelahousaye 2 points3 points ago

He doesn't look 6'2'' in this picture

[–]HarryZotter 4 points5 points ago

Another similarity

Look at his hand in the picture on the bottom from the following link, where he's by the fridge wearing a maroon Brown hoodie.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2301824/Sunil-Tripathi-case-New-surveillance-video-shows-missing-Brown-student-leaving-home-day-disappearance-brother-reveals-22-year-old-suffers-depression.html

and compare it to the new one of him leaving the scene of the crime, it's enlarged and the second to the left on the bottom of this link: http://i.imgur.com/sOWD6Lu.jpg

I'm not going to say the bomber is definitely the missing student, but it's another similarity.

[–]bostonredd 42 points43 points ago

Imagine if you went missing, maybe while in a state of depression. Imagine if all signs pointed to the idea that you had committed suicide. Imagine if you had siblings and parents praying every day that you would come home safe, while knowing that with each day that passed, it was more likely that you were dead.

Now imagine your picture gets posted all over Reddit and other social media sites, and eventually could get picked up by the media. Your family has to watch you be convicted by the media before you've ever seen a court of law. While you are still missing. While they are still hoping and praying that you come home safe.

Don't post people's personal information - including their full names. Especially while connecting them to "maybe being the bombers." Submit your information to the FBI, who will release it when or if they at least have some proof beyond "well this guy sort of looks like that guy, in a way about 50K other ethnically ambiguous dudes in Boston wearing baseball caps do."

[–]plightsimulator 26 points27 points ago

On the bright side, if there is any, his missing persons case gets extra, extra attention.

[–]schultheiss 14 points15 points ago

BPD just identified him in Watertown.

[–]GemmaTeller 8 points9 points ago

He's not a cat, he didn't run away from home to go die, he was seen on surveillance camera a couple weeks later. He left home untraced for a reason.

[–]bobbychuck 15 points16 points ago

Now imagine that all these strange coincidence line up and he is involved and Reddit helps find their son.

[–]ortcuttJamaica Plain 12 points13 points ago

His disappearance has already been made a matter of public interest. Discussion of the fact that he bears a STRONG resemblance to Suspect #2 is also a matter of public interest.

[–]thingsthingsthings 6 points7 points ago

As of 3 am EDT, the police mentioned his name on the scanner as a suspect that they're currently trying to get into custody.

[–]Negro_Napoleon 16 points17 points ago

[–]yummygummysharks 5 points6 points ago

Sunil's nose is rounded and the bomber's nose is pointed.

[–]HarryZotter 7 points8 points ago

While I mostly agree, some of the pictures of the missing student's nose look more similar to the bomber than others.

https://sphotos-b.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ash4/208841_405946952836001_1887664920_n.jpg

http://imgur.com/B65iRca

Let's not forget our eyes can play tricks on us based on angles -- from the angles we've seen, suspect #2's nose is more pointed, but from other angles we haven't seen, it may not be.

Ditto the missing student, where in most pictures it looks more rounded, whereas in others it looks more pointed.

Chances are Suspect #2 isn't the missing student, but I hope the FBI is at least checking it out. There are enough similarities in both their physical features as well as in the circumstances that it at least warrants that.

I hope the missing student isn't the bomber... I would feel horribly bad for the family to go through everything they have for that to happen.

[–]SteazGaming 10 points11 points ago

So I didn't think Sunil was the guy at first, but I went to his facebook (which is now offline, btw) page and saw that he liked philosophy, he was extremely intelligent, played chess, read a lot, and the only book he "liked" on facebook was Ishmael by Dan Quinn (1992). I looked up this book on wikipedia and two of the major themes are as follows:

"Ishmael denies that the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil was forbidden to humans simply to test humans' self-control. Instead, he proposes that eating of the Tree would not actually give humans divine knowledge but would only make humans believe they had been given it, and that the Tree represents the choice to bear the responsibility of deciding which species live and which die. This is a decision agricultural peoples (i.e. Takers) make when deciding which organisms to cultivate, which to displace, and which to kill in protection of the first. Ishmael explains that the Fall of Adam represents the Semitic belief that, once mankind usurps this responsibility - historically decided through natural ecology (i.e. food chains) - that mankind will perish. He cites as fulfillment of this prophecy contemporary environmental crises such as endangered or extinct species, global warming, and modern mental illnesses."

That kind of sounds like an intellectual justification for mass murder, deciding which organisms live or die...

Anyways, the other "likes" of his included braveheart, v for vendetta, scarface, gladiator, etc. Interpret this the way you'd like.

The one thing that caught my eye was that earlier today I was running on the idea that one of the bombers would post something to facebook, some smart phone footage or something of the bomb. And I tried to do a pretty refined search to see which raw cell phone or smart phone videos were posted. One video, which was right after the blast, where the cop is saying "get back, get back" caught my eye. I went to this channel page, and I saw another video posted recently on THAT very channel that was a clip of william wallace from braveheart yelling "FREEEEDOMMM!" However, since this was before I even knew about Sunil, I didn't think to remember it, and I can't find it again.. if someone is as curious as me to pursue the most random of leads, then go for it.

Just thought it'd be good to get these thoughts down, going to continue the search now.

[–]SteazGaming 2 points3 points ago

Also, though the facebook is down, this bulletin posted on his find sunil website gives an accurate description, as well as some more personal details. At the very least, if this kid isn't the bomber, it's good publicity to find the kid in the first place anyways.. http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GC6O9cf2cUU/UV3TQoVQeoI/AAAAAAAAJqQ/hl5PWXeZ_bo/s1600/Sunil+Tripathi+22+MISSING+-+RI.jpg

[–]orrnumber4 1 point2 points ago

Here's a question. Assuming you are talking about his personal FB page and not the family one where they're trying to find him (I assume you are, with all his personal favorites and such), how would it be down?

Wouldn't he have to log into FB to shut it down? Unless FB or another agency decided it had to be taken offline.

[–]Mikestanley6 1 point2 points ago

I did see the picture, my gf told me I was crazy for thinking him and his friend w the glasses on we're the two bombers. Weird that they took it down.

[–]yeti145 1 point2 points ago

The picture I was talking about? It was taken down within 12 minutes from when I first saw it. The pic was taken down quick then the page followed. Can you describe the picture?

If Sunil knew people and the FBI were looking for him, why would he go out in public and risk being spotted by someone? If someone recognized him as the missing person it would have ruined his whole plan. Wouldn't he have worn the hat the other way or worn sunglasses?

[–]kegsneggs 1 point2 points ago

6 feet tall and 130 lbs. jesus.

[–]diba_ 2 points3 points ago

6'2. Even worse

EDIT: Might just be 6ft, not sure. Saw mixed reports. Regardless, 6ft. and 130 lbs fucking sucks. At least he can hit the weights in prison LOL

FBI releases close up picture. Hard to tell. FBI Link

[–]gnarlyskillet77 1 point2 points ago

Boston Police Scanners just mentioned his name

[–]FerrisBueIIer 1 point2 points ago

It's him. He's apparently loose in Watertown, MA right now, while the other suspect has been apprehended.

[–]dmcdougall 1 point2 points ago

Boston police scanner has ID'd him as suspect in the Watertown events tonight. Appears to be also linked to marathon bombing.

[–]dropab 1 point2 points ago

[–]brooks1089 1 point2 points ago

many of the pictures are of his brother. take caution as to what you post as that individual has no right to be implicated in the matter.

[–]Addyct 1 point2 points ago

You were fucking right. Amazing.

[–]lefroyobunny 1 point2 points ago

This is so crazy.... One of our respected MIT police lost his life to these fuckers. Angry as hell right now

[–]SteazGaming 1 point2 points ago

Someone else DID post the Sunil theory, but it was promptly removed for fear that it was a witch hunt and to save the family pain, but turns out, they found their child today.

[–]cwumed 1 point2 points ago

Yeah, BULLSHIT the family didn't recognize him.

[–]kranged1[!] 1 point2 points ago

Are news outlets recognizing this, or hanging their head in shame?

[–]TheRealBeefRemoulade 1 point2 points ago

i posted this 45 minutes ago and it was deleted ive also seen a lot o other things get deleted.

[–]thedarcy 1 point2 points ago

I long for the day when Reddit overthrows FOX News..

[–]OldIronLungs 1 point2 points ago

I was going through all this evidence and explaining to my girlfriend how this was the guy when I heard the bombs go off. This is historic Internet sleuthing. I Facebook linked his page hours before and someone took it off my profile.

[–]ryno 1 point2 points ago

[–]Cyfa 1 point2 points ago

YOU'RE FUCKING AWESOME OP

[–]hyperfl0w 2 points3 points ago

according to this source the name is quite uncommon. There are 725 people in the U.S. with the last name Tripathi.

There are fewer than 1,579 people in the U.S. with the first name Sunil.

[–]markfoster24 3 points4 points ago

yeah, probably not the same guy

[–]GonPakaya 1 point2 points ago

This is a historic thread:)

[–]Shahe_B 1 point2 points ago

Reddit will soon replace the FBI.

[–]homeyhomedawg 1 point2 points ago

holy shit, he has a bmi of 16.7

[–]frmango1 1 point2 points ago

Well done. It's a shame that the original post linking the suspect with the missing student is deleted. I wonder why it was removed?

[–]nixonrichard 1 point2 points ago

The FBI IS FUCKED! They were watching this guy and he blew up the Boston Marathon right under their nose!

The curse of Lon Horiuchi

[–]themountaincure 1 point2 points ago

Every day for the past few weeks I have walked by a flyer posted near the Community College stop on the orange line of the T, seeking information about Sunil Tripathi's disappearance. If he turns out to be one of the marathon bombers I am going to email my high school English teachers and take back every dismissive thing I ever said about foreshadowing.

[–]Crimsonred77 4 points5 points ago

Read this article about Sunil's disappreance

Why was the FBI looking for him: http://news.gather.com/viewArticle.action?articleId=281474981864024

[–]Negro_Napoleon 4 points5 points ago

It might explain why DHS was out there. They probably thought SOMETHING was going down but were trying to prevent it.

[–]ninja1525 6 points7 points ago

these are images from a video of him on youtube compared to suspect #2 http://imgur.com/3riC0y2

[–]humanrecon 5 points6 points ago

those head shaving frame grabs from youtube come home vid are his brother

[–]yeti145 4 points5 points ago

anyone else see the picture on his "missing" fb page about a guy running in the marathon? it was taken down around 2144?

[–]Aprilblue 3 points4 points ago

[–]ortcuttJamaica Plain 1 point2 points ago

Is that Sunil or the brother?

[–]Tstrong420 2 points3 points ago

The FBI better offer op a job

[–]TheSmallIndian 2 points3 points ago

OP has become the greatest Redditor of all time

[–]Prooffreader 8 points9 points ago

If you suspect someone, inform the FBI, don't post his picture on Reddit. He's been missing and his family is worried sick. Shame on you.

[–]bikerholic 3 points4 points ago

[–]hadisious 5 points6 points ago

The nose really looks extremely similar.

[–]triliana 8 points9 points ago

I don't think it does, honestly. Tripathi's nose is a little bumpy and hooks down at the bottom. The suspect's nose (at least in potato-res) looks straight and flat at the bottom. They're both prominent noses, but I don't think they are terribly alike. Also, something about the bone structure seems off but I can't place it.

[–]Nora_Epinephron 1 point2 points ago

Everyone is focused on the nose, but I think the ears look remarkably similar. Look at how they jut out.

[–]maowsers93 2 points3 points ago

Reddit!!!!!! I tip my hat!!! I stand in amazement!!!! I actively watched people post pictures of this kid on reddit earlier today and watched a young woman make a meme of him and post it all over twitter! I am 100% positive that it is the pressure put on him from the online community that brought about his panic and the situation that will ultimately lead to his arrest. If I could I'd give you a blow job right now reddit, a big blow job.
