Hotwax Trax, Asian exploitation cinema soundtracks

I ordered a copy of the movie Bad Girl Mako (Furyô shôjô Mako) (1971) [ IMDB ] from eBay and it came (as expected) as a DVD-R with a color printer cover using a low-res jpg of the movie poster. I’ve sourced most of the legit copies of pinky violence films I can find and just recently discovered fringe sites that sell copies of unavailable films ripped from who-knows-where. I’ve ordered several from a site called DVDLady which, considering the 30-45 day shipping estimate, seems to be non-US. The images from the site all look pretty pixellated too, so I’m expecting DVD-Rs when they arrive.

Opening to Bad Girl Mako with its groovy soundtrack

I started Bad Girl Mako just to check the quality and it’s surprisingly good. Basic 1970s movie print. The soundtrack for the opening scene (above, with the classic freeze-frame when the title is shown) plus the music performed in the dance club put me into research mode to find soundtracks for this and others. Preferably on vinyl. And if not, I’ve discovered only moderately expensive shops on Etsy that burn albums from custom playlists. So…

The external sites section on Bad Girl Maco‘s IMDB page links to a page on Soundtrack Collector’s web site. The album is published on the Solid Records label from their Hotwax Trax composers series, this entry containing music by Hajime Kaburagi [ IMDB ]. It includes four tracks from Bad Girl Mako plus tracks from several other movies including four from Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter [ IMDB | Wikipedia ]. The Sex Hunter movie is available stand-alone, but also comes in a set of DVD/Blu-ray discs with the three other Stray Cat Rock films.

Analysis of the cultural references and the influence of 2nd wave feminism in the Stray Cat Rock films, recommended. That YouTube account has other videos analyzing the pinky violence films.

Hajime Kaburagi is credited for 244 films (!). Of the ones I have:

  • Stray Cat Rock: Sex Hunter (#3 of 5)
  • Bad Girl Mako
  • Girl Boss Blues: Queen Bee’s Challenge (#2 of 7)
  • Terrifying Girls’ High School: Animal Courage (#4 of 4)
  • Female Prisoner Scorpion: #701’s Grudge Song (#4 of 4)

The album has a total of 28 tracks, all with just letter/number catalog codes as track names (e.g. M5-2, PS-99-1, etc.).

Hotwax Trax CDSOL-1178, definitely Blue Note inspired cover

Now that I had the label and catalog number, I found the entry for it on Discogs. There were none for sale (there’s a used copy for $55 and a new one for $150 on Amazon) but, as there often is on Discogs entries, there was a video with five tracks from the movie including one additional that isn’t on the album. Tracks (with their start indexes in the video):

  1. M2-2 (0:00)
  2. “In My World” Peter Pan (2:02) – not on the album
  3. PS-99-1 (5:33)
  4. M4-1 (9:15)
  5. M25-1 (10:15)

The obvious next was stop to see if it and/or others from the Hotwax Trax series were available on eBay. The search for Hotwax Trax brought up five entries for CDs ranging from $35 to $45. The most expensive being for Delinquent Girl Boss: Worthless to Confess, one of the two DGB films I own from the series (the two others, coincidentally, will arrive in 30-45 days). The CDs are little pricey, but not too bad. Sadly, the album with music from Bad Girl Mako was not available.

Next up: back to YouTube to follow up on the video that was linked to from the Discogs page. Jackpot. There were several results, most posted by sunnyboy66 and containing links to the sunnyboy66 web site which appears to be a playlist/compilation aggregator for “world” music (for lack of a better term). The website has the albums embedded as MP4s.

I also found some of the CDs from Japanese sites for a little less, but shipping would be ridiculous. Ripping from video may be in my future.
